Mrs. Millner

Hello My Name Is...

Monica Millner

I am an educator who loves to work with children. I am proud to work for Roanoke City Schools and I love Fishburn Park. The children truly are our future and I consider it an honor to be able to watch them as they grow and learn.

I attended Roanoke City Public Schools as a child graduating from William Fleming in 1996. I then went on to Virginia Tech on a full academic scholarship where I earned my bachelor's degree in early childhood education in 2000. I then went on to earn my master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction from Virginia Tech in 2001. In 2007 I became National Board Certified. In 2013 I received my second masters from Hampton University in Administration.  I have a passion for learning and will always be found taking a class or going to a conference.

I began teaching for Roanoke City Public Schools in August 2001 at Roanoke Academy. Before starting with the city, I taught preschool on the campus of Virginia Tech. I have been a member of the Fishburn family since 2008. I taught second grade for the first 8 years of my career. I then went to third grade for five years. This will be my third year back in second grade. I have spent several summers in fifth and fourth grade. Truth be known, second grade is my favorite.

I live in the city with my husband and son. We believe that God and family come first. My husband is the Creative Director at M3:GRAFIX and Jamal II will be a second grader here at Fishburn!  As a family we enjoy traveling, watching movies, attending Jamal II's practices and games, and having parties where we celebrate our happiness. In addition to our family of three, we have a strong extended family. Not a day goes by that we are not in contact with them.

I absolutely love music; if you pass by me in the car, I am not talking to myself I am singing at the top of my lungs. My musical tastes are eclectic: I enjoy music from several genres ranging from Slow R&B to POP to Gospel. I also love "old school" music: Earth, Wind, & Fire, The Temptations, Patti Labelle etc.

I enjoy teaching, I am doing what I have wanted to do since I was a little girl, and I love working with children. I want to see all of my students succeed. It takes the efforts of teachers, students AND parents in order for children to succeed.
